Industrial & Arc Flash Engineer

Alpha Engineering provides consulting electrical engineering services to electric utilities, commercial and industrial entities, colleges and universities, and renewable-energy developers. This role performs relaying, coordination, arc flash, and power-quality studies for electrical distribution systems and industrial facilities.

The role

Duties & responsibilities

Job requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

Build and analyze electrical distribution-system models in various engineering programs.
Develop reports for engineering studies, and validate study results.
Report writing and customer service.
Data collection: travel to industrial jobsites to conduct electrical site audits by examining existing equipment and systems.
Report creation: organize jobsite data using software packages to produce analysis reports on the electrical system.
Report review: collaborate with engineers and designers to review reports and identify risk remediation or mitigation techniques.
Label installation: print and install safety identification labels on equipment per the generated reports.
Electrical design: use plant-system knowledge to assist in designing for, or mitigating, risks within facilities.
Ensure hazard warning labels, safety placards, and tags are applied to all studied devices.
Review IR and device-coordination studies and resolve compliance discrepancies with vendor, construction, and maintenance teams.
Escalate safety or compliance risks to the controlling authority and help develop mitigation strategies.
Serve as a technical advisor for the application of OSHA, NFPA, and IEEE electrical-safety requirements.
Provide OSHA arc-flash and hazardous-energy-control support to field maintenance teams for new product integration or facility renovation.

What it takes

Key competencies

Project management: you will carry several jobs at once, at different stages and on different clocks. That means holding a schedule, knowing what each one needs next, and adjusting when a client moves a date on you.
Problem solving: most of what we get called about looks like one event and turns out to be a pattern. You need to be the sort of person who asks what else this has happened to before deciding what caused it.
Writing and talking to people: our reports get read by boards, facility managers and crews, sometimes all three. You have to be able to write for those readers and hold your own on the phone.
Working through disagreement: vendors, contractors, and utility staff will not always agree on what is happening or whose problem it is. Getting to an answer without escalating is most of the job on a bad week.
Reliability: hit the dates you commit to. Our clients plan outages and order equipment around what we tell them, so a slipped milestone costs somebody real money.
Comfort in the field: arc flash work means opening cabinets in live facilities and labeling equipment where people actually work. This is not a desk-only role.
Care about the outcome: the numbers you calculate end up on a label that somebody trusts before they open a door. That is the reason the work gets checked twice.

Background

Education & experience

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited university preferred.
Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school considered.
Background in Civil, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering considered.
Experience in the utility or industrial power fields.
Knowledge of electrical theory; completed power-engineering courses preferred.
Knowledge of overcurrent relaying.
Knowledge of CAD software and a good understanding of electrical design and AutoCAD tools.
Good knowledge of the NEC and/or NESC.
Experience with engineering software such as ASPEN, EasyPower, ETAP, Milsoft, or SKM preferred.
Power-quality understanding, troubleshooting, and investigation skills.
PE, or the ability to obtain a professional license, a plus.
Maintain a valid driver’s license.
Must pass background and driving-history checks as well as drug and alcohol testing.
