If you have ever chased down an electrical problem at your plant, you know this loop. The equipment keeps tripping, so you call the vendor. The vendor checks their equipment, finds it within spec, and points at the power coming in. So you call the utility. The utility checks their delivery, finds it within spec, and points back at your facility. Everyone is being reasonable from where they sit, and the problem is no closer to solved.

The loop, step by step

  • Equipment trips and you open a ticket with the vendor.
  • The vendor tests their equipment and reports it within spec.
  • The vendor suggests the incoming power is the issue.
  • You contact the utility and open a second investigation.
  • The utility checks delivery at the meter and reports it within spec.
  • The utility points back at conditions inside your facility.
  • Weeks pass and no one has looked at your own electrical system.
  • The next incident starts the same sequence over.

What each cycle costs you

Every round burns a set of calls, a set of checks, and a stretch of waiting, and it lands back where it started. Production keeps taking the hits the whole time. The same conversation happens again after the next incident, and the problem holds its ground for as long as the question of whose fault it is stays unsettled. The loop does not resolve on its own, because it is built so that everyone in it can honestly say it is not theirs.

The assumption holding the loop together

Everyone in the loop has a reason to point somewhere other than at themselves.

The vendor does not want the cause to be their equipment. The utility does not want it to be their delivery. Neither has any incentive to go looking in the one place the problem often actually lives, which is inside your plant's own electrical system.

Underneath it is usually the assumption that bad power is coming from outside. That is the natural conclusion when voltage reads out of range and equipment trips, and it is frequently wrong. A large motor starting, harmonic distortion from drives, or a load imbalance can produce those exact symptoms from entirely within your walls. As long as the working theory points outward, the cause inside your plant never gets examined.

What ends it

Another round of calls will not settle this, because everyone has already given their opinion and everyone is cleared under their own testing. What breaks a deadlock built on opinion is evidence, taken from a place neither party controls.
